Talking of stress...

A funny thing happened to me on the way home from a forum last night. It had been a really long day, concentrating and delivering a couple of talks, then going into London to listen to someone else talking for two and a half hours. So, M25 in the morning, M1 and drive through London from north to south and then the M23! The M23 ground to a halt for about an hour and a half. Until about midnight. Ho hum.

So, I was shattered and very quickly bored. After quite some time, a car whizzed by on the hard shoulder, followed by several others looking furtive. Then came two fire appliances, an ambulance and three breakdown trucks.

It was the private car drivers that wound me up. Perhaps that says something about me... There they were, rushing past in a lane reserved for the emergency services, while everyone else sat and waited patiently.

After many years of thinking that stress is a bad thing to experience, I can now report that it has a positive aspect! It kept me awake and alert enough to get me home after quite a day.

I agree that those of us who stick to the rules and wait (im)patiently for things to be cleared up do tend to find those who break the code extremely irritating!

I have heard it said that we are just jealous, wishing that we had the nerve to do the same thing, but the research I have seen does not back it up. Most of us have some level of fairness (even altruism) in us and are actually wound up about the fact these people may indeed cause further problems (such as, the ambulance cannot get through). I certainly find myself most irritated by signs of gross stupidity in these circumstances, where I can see that these moves have potentially endangered lives, for example.

    I hope you have recovered!

Rogering in the fast lane gets my goat

I know what you mean about stress and especially when it comes to driving around on the motorway. I go quite often to Wilton along the M25 and have been witness to many an accident and simply damn foolish driving. Cutting in and weaving between the cars - and that smart alec bombing up the inside lane to cut in on the idiots hogging the middle lane at 80 miles and hour (oh that was me). My special pet hate is National Express buses (supposedly governed to 60mph) falling behind my Disco and attempting to roger the back end they get so close.

    yours stressfully

Ah yes! The joys of motorway driving. I'm sure there's a book or two in it somewhere. I have to tell you that I know know the first names of all the rivets in the central reservation between junctions 9 and 16 on the M25.

You and I have things in common it seems as far as pet hates go. How about the BMW that always cuts across three lanes of traffic to exit at a junction? And the idiot who flashes at you to get out of the way so that can impress you with their acceleration to the speed of sound if only there wasn't such a long queue of other cars in front of them?

Then you hit the country lanes where it's impossible to overtake and there's that same person in front doing a constant 10 - 20 mph slower that the speed limit. >8-(

Bring back the Sinclair C5 say I!

    In hysterics,
