Sitting at my computer

Posted 30th October 2007 at 20:56 by Simon Donnelly
Long time, no write.

Here I was sitting at my computer today wishing that I was out in the incredibly warm Autumn sunshine. So why didn't I go out into it? All that work was beckoning - preparing for meetings later in the week, research to persuade people, sorting out what I'm going to say on cold calls and so on. And then there's the pressure to satisfy myself that I'm actually doing all the right things and not wasting my time. Now I'm sitting here in the evening in front of my computer listening to a webinar on business startups! What am I doing?

One of the incoming calls today was a request for coaching. You'd think that all the alarm bells would have rung then as one of things I coach on is work/life balance, but no...

Now I'm feeling a bit drained, vaguely unsatisfied and regretting not taking that delightful walk to capture all the fabulous colours with my camera. Ah, well - there's always tomorrow... Except it will be the same then.

So, what's the solution? Diary time? Just down tools and go? Really make the effort? I know that I'll feel so much better if I just get up and take the time to relax a little and will be so much more productive.

My plan for tomorrow is to get out for at least half an hour. What I would really appreciate is if someone would check to make sure I did it by replying to this blog late tomorrow afternoon. If I haven't done it, I shall present my rear end for a good (virtual) kick.

Aaah! Feeling better already.

    Hi Simon,
Just thought I should check if you managed to get a walk - the weather here is beautiful!

Am going to stop for a few minutes myself and take the dog for a walk - I can catch up later.

But I agree that getting a work-life balance is not easy, requires good time management, and I have found requires carefull use of that short word 'no'.

I get involved in far too many things myself, and enjoy the variety, but just sometimes I will ask for a meeting to be made at a time that suits me or I will actually decide not to put in a proposal for the work that will take me 5 hours travelling - bad for the environment as well as my WLB.

So, let us know how you got on!

    Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the note. I've just got back indoors after spending a happy half hour pottering in the garden, admiring the colours and the manic insect life! I'm struggling with the fact that there are so many hoverflies and bumble bees around on 31st October.

I have to say that I'm feeling good now. I knew that a bit of self-imposed peer pressure would force me out of the computer chair and into the fresh air. What I need to do is make it habitual. It's surprising how much benefit can be had from such a short break. I read somewhere that taking regular five-minute breaks throughout the day keeps productivity at an above average level throughout the day.

Must be time to go and make a cup of tea then!

    Hello Simon!
My name's Betty and boy! do i know what you mean? I do get to walk but its walking to work and i usually have to dodge a lot of vehicles. But back when i was in University, i used to walk a lot and my university was an excellent place for that purpose.
I hope you utilize more of these opportunities. And for the rest of us, i hope we are lucky enough to have these opportunities from time to time.

    Betty

    Hi Betty,
It's good to hear from you. For a short while after I put the comment in I was getting out and about fairly regularly. Then I went away for a walking weekend and fell off a large lump of rock (not drunk - honest!), damaging my ankle. Now I'm back at square one again. Funny how these things work out isn't it?
