Mallorcan Dreams

Posted 19th February 2008 at 09:01 by wood1e
We have just come back from a wonderful holiday in Mallorca with our friends. The holiday was especially magical as we stayed on their yacht, which is based in Palma marina.

Every other day we would sail from Palma to one of the many inlets around the island, where we would anchor for a few hours admiring the beautiful Mallorca properties circling the bay. During the evening we would cook on board and eat on deck under the clear night sky full of stars, listening to the night birds making their eerie sounds. Then we would either return to Palma or remain in the bay overnight.

On the days that we didn’t sail, we hired a car and toured inland, searching out the real Mallorca. Properties inland were more diverse than those around the coastline, ranging from humble shacks to quaint terraced houses to huge stone mansions. We spent lunch usually outside a restaurant in the village square frequented by the local inhabitants, or in a tiny café down a back street following written recommendations by journalists. We were never disappointed.

Non-sailing days meant that evenings could be much more formal: we women dressed in our finest clothes and jewellery, and our men wore long trousers (in contrast to their ubiquitous shorts), and we then either walked from Palma marina to a nearby restaurant along the waterfront (one of our favourites was also frequented by King Juan Carlos), or we would hire a taxi or walk to the centre of Palma and try one of its many excellent restaurants. Some of these restaurants had such spectacular interiors that it was difficult to choose between the surroundings or the food. Always after our meal, just like the locals, we promenaded along the streets which were brightly lit by shops still open, even though it was long after sunset.

Although the weather was idyllic, it did rain once. It took place on our last evening, just as we were walking back from Palma to the marina: and it poured down. Even though the rainstorm lasted less than half an hour, it was enough for us to be soaked to the skin, and we were a very sorry sight to behold when we entered the marina looking like drowned rats. But we soon dried off on board, and then sat on deck long into the warm night drinking sambouccas.

We plan to return to Palma very soon; but this time we will be on a mission. We will not just be admiring the Mallorca properties; we will be hoping to buy one!
