Best Man Speeches
It’s a great honour when asked to be anyone’s best man, sometimes you half expect to be asked, other times it may come as a complete surprise. Either way, if chosen as your mate’s best man, you need to ensure you don’t let him down when it comes to the best man speech.
A few useful tips when it comes to your speech :
Plan early
The likelihood is that your mate has started planning his wedding already, most wedding are at least a few months after the initial proposal, some even years, so there is no need to wait until the last minute.
Perhaps when on the treadmill at the gym, start to think about fun times from the past, mentally visualise yourself standing up in front of the wedding party telling the story. If you get a good feeling about the story, make a note of it. After a while all these little notes will unfold into a great best man speech. Anyone scribbling down a few ideas the night before the wedding is bound to flop.
Read it to out loud yourself and test it on a friend
You don’t want to think you’ve written a great best man speech only for it not to work out on the day. Practice it, and then practice it some more. Read the speech out loud in front of the mirror, or test it out on a friend. Either way, ensure that the first time you run through the whole speech isn’t on the wedding day.
Be Confident
When standing up in front of a big wedding party, it can be very daunting. You may know some of the people at the wedding, you may know very few.
Either way you’ll want to relax and try to enjoy the speech as best as possible. Don’t worry, every member of the wedding party wants you to succeed. The bride and groom want to be proud of your speech, so give them a good account.
Focus on a few people in the crowd, don’t just stare at one person, or worst still stare at your notes.
Write your own material
Search the internet for a few one liners, but don’t rip off long stories, or even worse pay someone to write it for you – if your mate knows you well enough to ask you to be his best man then surely you can piece together a few stories to ensure his wedding day is memorable for a good best man speech.
Risky Stories
If you’ve known the groom for a long time, chances are you’ve been in a few sticky situations with him, possibly long before he met his bride to be. If you can picture the bride, groom, mother or father of the bride squirming in their seat at your best man speech, then don’t write that story down.
Some tales of the groom’s life are best left behind. If you really want to mention something, hint towards it, leave the wedding party wondering what little secret the best man is sharing with the groom.
Final closing telegrams
It’s the best man’s duty to read any messages from people who were invited to the wedding but couldn’t make the wedding day. You may find you get armfuls of messages to read out, sometimes you may get one or two.
A final way to end the best man speech on a high is to throw in one or two “made up” telegrams. Get the wedding party giggling by throwing in a couple of spoof telegrams as a final passing shot to the groom.
A wedding toast
Always end your speech with every member of the wedding party on their feet with their glasses raised.
Your final duty is to end your best man speech with a toast to the bride and groom, start off with “ladies and gentleman, please be upstanding for a toast to the bride and groom……” then when all the wedding party is on their feet, make your closing comments wishing the happy couple a fantastic life together.
