Re: New seminar series at Sussex University
And here are the details for this weeks seminar:
Details of this week's visiting speaker are-
The dynamics of processing salient stimuli in the Stroop task Thursday 1st of November, 2007 at 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm
Location: Pevensey 1, 1B3
Speaker: Dinkar Sharma, University of Kent
Abstract
In a series of studies I will describe the dynamics of interference in the
modified Stroop task using salient (emotional and addiction related)
stimuli. Our findings show that there are two potential sources of
interference from salient stimuli: a fast effect (interference on the
current trial) and a slow effect (interference on subsequent trials). The
empirical evidence to support this will be presented as well as some new
data from both normal and clinical samples. Theoretical explanations for
the slow effect are explored with emphasis on a recently developed neural
network model of salient sensitive control.

Re: New seminar series at Sussex University
and the latest talk, this Thursday is:
Thursday 6th of December, 2007 at 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm
Location: Pevensey 1, 1B3
Prof Neil Macrae, Aberdeen University
Knowing Me, Knowing You:
Tactics of Person Understanding
As part of a current upsurge of interest in understanding how the brain gives rise to the remarkable human capacity for social interaction, a number of recent studies have examined the neural basis of social cognition
- the mental processes that allow one person to apprehend the psychological properties of another, including his or her transient beliefs and feelings as well as more stable person-specific characteristics, such as personality traits and dispositions. One question that has been central to this emerging enterprise considers whether social cognition draws on a unique set of cognitive processes dedicated to navigating the social world or instead represents a special instance of more general-purpose cognitive processes. In other words, is an understanding of the mental states and behaviours of other people governed by distinct cognitive mechanisms dedicated to social cognition or by a subset of the processes that give rise to other human faculties? Of further interest is the related question of which psychological tactics people use in their attempts to understand others. These issues are considered in the current talk.
