The Dorset Hub of the BPS Wessex Branch invites you to the following talk
A Reflection on Using Psychology to Help those with Mental Health Problems
by Sue Barker
ON: Wednesday 11th June at 5.00pm
(light refreshments from 4.30 and afterwards at 6.00)
AT: The Lansdowne Campus of Bournemouth University
(Room B407 in Bournemouth House)
Sue Barker, a Senior Lecturer in Nursing in the School of Health & Social Care at Bournemouth University, will present a reflection on her experiences of using psychology to facilitate her in helping people with mental health problems.
Sue began her training as a mental health nurse in 1983 and although she enjoyed her work as a nurse, after 6 years Sue was becoming frustrated with her ability to help patients. In 1989, Sue studied for a BSc Psychology with the Open University, followed by an MSc in Health Psychology. Sue will reflect on how she applies her academic study of psychology (theories, concepts and evidence) to her work. She will describe how understanding the different perspectives allowed her to become self aware and how humanistic and cognitive theories support her interactions and caring responses. These reflections will be discussed with reference to case scenarios, relevant theories and research.
Admission is free of charge and open to all. Pre-event refreshments will be available from 4.30pm outside the lecture room.
