Analysing essay titles
It is important to assess process words when developing your plan for an essay.
Have a look at these and let me know if you agree with the definitions (basically, what you should be doing if you see these words in your essay title).
Compare - look for similarities - and differences - and reach a conclusion about which is preferable.
Contrast - set in opposition (to bring out the differences) this is usually easier than comparison, but you usually need to do both.
Criticise - give your judgement (based on evidence and rational reasoning) about the merit of theories, opinions, concepts, or about the 'facts' indicated.
Define - set out the precise meaning of a word, phrase or concept. Sometimes it may be preferable to examine different possible definitions and disputes over definitions.
Describe - give a detailed or graphic account.
Discuss - investigate or examine by argument, debate, give reasons for and against something. Always develop the argument in a logical manner, and look for contradictions at all times.
Evaluate - make an appraisal of the worth of something. Needs a lot of 'discussion' to do this well, and you should come to a conclusion about the answer.
Explain - make plain, interpret and give reasons for something.
Illustrate - use a figure or diagram to clarify, or make clear by use of concrete examples.
Interpret - expound the meaning of, make clear, usually give your judgement about the meaning.
If you have every looked at an exam or essay question and not been sure how to handle it - do post it up here and we will help you to analyse it!
