InfoIcon Bullying - Ban Bullying at Work Day

There is increasing evidence that bullying is related to diversity issues - bullies often target someone who is slightly different to themselves.

It is worth remembering that next Wednesday, 7th November is the national ban bullying at work day. Bullying at work has huge costs, to the firm, to the individuals, and to the nation (estimated cost including time off and using NHS resources through related sickness is at least £1.8 billion and replacement costs of employees who leave due to being bullied £400 million)

Have a look at this website for more information:

Thanks for this Jon, I think bigger companies can indeed appear to be more focused on this. I also agree there is a chance smaller companies may do less because they tend to spend less on training.

However, I have seen research that suggests bullying is still a major problem in some large organisations, including some in the public sector.

Of course, there are also problems with definitions of bullying. Some of the surveys use a number of terms together, such as 'harrassed, bullied or abused' and these often get a higher rate of 'bullying' incidents reported back than others that define the term more tightly.

Here are some figures from the UMIST research done in 2000:

1 in 10 workers been bullied in the last 6 months
Varies between sectors, worst were
Post and telecommunications – 16%
Prison service – 16%
Dance profession – 14%
Bullying is equally likely to affect a manager as a worker
70% of those bullied are done so as part of a group
For 2 out of 3 the bullying continues for more than a year
For 2 out of 5 it goes on for more than 2 years

So it does seem to be quite prevalent!
