Green Computing,
I have been reading several articles over the last month on Green management and whether there is any signs that the instrumental approach - lets do something if it pays us - is on the wane and an approach more akin to stewardship is growing. Alas not yet but I have been encouraged at least in the IT world that IT managers (and consumers for that matter) are starting to think about the energy their equipment uses and the potential effects this can have on the environment. PC's and the like contribute as much to global warming for example as airlines and is growing fast!!
What we can do in our own small way is consider the energy footprint of the equipment we buy and do not purchase if the energy consumed is excessive (its like the debate between plasma and lcd in the TV world). When we refuse to buy energy draining kit that demands banks of air-conditioning to keep it cool - as in the case of data centres - then the manufacturers will start to take note -and not before.
To some extent being green and exercising stewardship starts with us as small business owners and consumers - if the manufacturers do not design in a caring way we don't buy their goods and go elsewhere.
The discipline of the market can also be used to regulate 'it'
I found a nice blog that covers this in more detail.
