Hi Mary Anne,
I was a medical secretary working at the London Chest Hospital for a Professor of Thoracic Medicine for 5 years and then for a Consultant Psychiatrist in Basingstoke for 3 years. I had limited knowledge of medical terminology when I first started in London, but picked it up very easily. A good medical dictionary will give you all you need and a copy of MiMMs will give you all the medications both generic and otherwise.
I then did temp work for a firm of solicitors, knew nothing about their terminology either. But it really isn't hard. They have their own key phrases etc.
I currently work for myself and my client list includes people from the following types of business who all have their own terminology:
Construction, Manufacturing, Steel stockholding, Drilling and piling, Facilities, Human Resources, Entertainment, Training, Chiropractic, Chiropody, Industrial cleaning, Computing, Hospitality, Charities, Catering, Legal, Life Coaching, Mobile disco, PAT testing, Pond management, Archivist, Author, Inventor.
They are all just words like any others and really aren't that hard to master.
As for qualifications, I don't know, but your local college may have a course.
Hope that helps
Best wishes
Maggie
