Default Defining outsourcing

There is often discussion about what can be classed as outsourcing and what should be called 'sub-contracting'. I think the difference is around whether you would normally employ the staff yourself, or you have in the past employed staff to do this job (a lot of the issues arise with transferring the staff across to the outsourcing company).

So for example training and payroll services are often subcontracted to other organisations, but different issues may arise if you currently run a large payroll service in-house and are considering handing it all over to a third party.

Any comments/questions?

Stephanie

I was wondering if it would be possible to sub-contract our marketing services.
Currently we have a whole department for Marketing, but not having a FMCG environment. Would it be possible to sub-contract this function?

Hi Marthe,
I would suggest that you should look at what the department does at the moment, what you need it to achieve in the future, and what you hope to achieve by outsourcing.
There are many issues to consider when outsourcing an existing service (as opposed to outsourcing/sub-contracting a new area). Have a look at some of the advice we have given on this forum, and it should help (you might like to look at my blog on the subject as well!)

Are you willing to share why you are considering outsourcing?

kind regards
Stephanie

Thanks for the useful post. It would have clearified the concept of many.
Outsourcing refers to the transfer of daily back office functions of a business to an external firm which provides world-class services. The services are provided as a result of a contract. The jobs being outsourced can be done in house but few factors make the enterprises outsource them.
