Default NEO PI-R A guide to interpretation and feedback in a work context

As promised I purchased this and had a look to see if it gives suitable, helpful information about giving feedback.

It arrived the day after I ordered it, so that was a good start, and it does cover most of the things I was expecting.

Starting off with some discussion of the principles of interpretation and the steps you should consider (plus a very important note about 'average' scores, which I find a lot of people struggle with) it moves on to discuss the meaning of the domain scores and how they link together. This is an important aspect that again, many beginners in interpretation and feedback find difficult. There is then a full chapter on interpretation of facets and how they link to the domain and to others - including what to do when there are odd highs and lows within a domain or unusual facet differences in the overall profile. - the two chapters on combinations of domain scores and facets go into a lot more detail about that.

The book also includes some strategies for the feedback meeting and some suggested hypotheses and exploratory question.

The appendix discusses the general relevance of personality in the work context, the relationship between personality and effective performance and the very important consideration of the work situation on the expression of traits.

I think it will be a very useful book for those who want a better understanding of how to interpret and feed back NEO personality profiles, and it goes into a lot more detail than the standard NEO manual which all practitioners receive after training.

A little niggle is that it did not discuss more general issues of using self-report questionnaires to assess personality, which strangely is indicated as the subject of a final section which appears to have been lost in the final version. However others have written on this subject and I would hope most people who have been trained to Level B would understand that there are limitations in this approach!

The book can be ordered from Hogrefe - see more details on the following link:

NEO Personality Inventory Revised (UK edition) - Hogrefe

Scroll down and you will see the book listed - Ł48.00 plus VAT plus postage.

If you check that link it also details some published articles of research on the NEO.

I hope that helps, feel free to ask questions.

kind regards
Stephanie
