Default Thanks for starting this one - purpose of PP

The purpose of this forum will be to asess the benefits that positive psychology can offer to organizations - of all shapes and sizes.

Positive psychology (PP) aims to look at the bright side of work, how to use peoples strengths, facilitate creativity, and ensure well-being in the workplace.

Examples, questions, and comments are welcome.

Strengths

Hi Stephanie

Why does PP focus on Strengths - surely it is better to reduce weaknesses?

Default Re: Strengths

Shaw asks if it may be more useful to reduce weaknesses than enhance strengths.

I guess it depends a lot on the individual and the situation, as clearly some weaknesses do need sorting, and quickly!

However, on the whole, people respond better to encouragement of strengths, which can often actually reduce the weaknesses anyway.

So someone with a lot of empathy who is too shy to do good presentations can be helped to use that empathy to develop a rapport with people they are presenting to - they will still need practice at presenting, but by focusing on something they are good at you should find they improve more rapidly.

Any comments/questions?
