Default Hosting your website on a server at home

Hi

I know a few people who host their websites on a server at home. I don't get why, when thay can pay to get thier websites hosted on third party servers at low rates.

Websites hosted on servers at home seem to cause performance issues so can put visitors off or get them to go and visit another site.

Do you host your website business at home or with a third party?

Exclamation Re: Hosting your website on a server at home

We wouldn't dream of hosting any business website at home GKD - as you say if things start to go wrong, traffic gets high etc., and you cannot cope you will just annoy all your clients/potential clients.

We use 1stDomains - they have a really hefty bank of servers and good support etc., so we know we can rely on them and their systems to support everything we want to do.

It would be very interesting to hear what others think, or whether any of you have been frustrated by websites (that perhaps were not well hosted)?

Hosting at home is a big mistake although, if you have the resources like an in-house server / network / linux specialist and around Ł15000 (last time I checked) a year to get a half decent pipe routed to your location, it is an option.

We prefer to leave our hosting to Rackspace with their 247 fanatical freephone telephone support, they really do bend over backwards to help.

When you call them, you are usually put through to an engineer that has access to your machine and will help you there and then.

I can't sing their praises highly enough really which is why we now have 2 servers with them and I can sleep at night

We've considared it but the cost of a proper webhost can be very low. It doesn't seem worth it.
